Morning at Moccasin Lake Nature Park
This morning, I arrived at Moccasin Lake just a few minutes before it opened. I parked by the gate and waited, and sure enough, it swung open right at 10:00 a.m.
Before I even made it to the trails, a beautiful peacock caught my attention. He was preening right on the bed of a 4x4 pickup truck—it was the perfect start to the morning! I snapped a few quick photos before heading toward the bird enclosures.
The park has a raptor sanctuary for non-releasable birds of prey. I spent some time visiting the falcons, owls, vultures, and bald eagles. It’s heartening to see these magnificent birds being so well cared for; the enclosures are incredibly clean and well-maintained.
Next, I ventured out onto the trails. The path is a lovely loop made of packed shell and sand, with several beautiful boardwalks winding through the area. I was immediately impressed—it felt like stepping back into "Old Florida." It’s largely untouched by man, filled with lush ferns, towering pine trees, arrowhead vines, and spiral ginger everywhere you look.
Along the way, I passed a small, peaceful pond where I spotted a cute painted turtle sunning himself. Once I reached the back of the park, I spent some time on the observation deck overlooking the lake. It was the perfect spot to just stand, breathe, and enjoy the quiet. I noticed plenty of water hyacinth—I’ve been seeing that plant everywhere lately!
On my way back to the entrance, I had a funny little encounter: a piece of flying debris actually hit me on top of the head! When I looked up to see what had happened, I realized it was a stunning Pileated Woodpecker. I absolutely love their markings; they look like they belong in a Mad Max movie.
I’m not always the fastest at changing lenses, and by the time I was ready, he was already on to his next adventure. I’m just happy I managed to snag that one good photo.
Of course, I couldn't leave without visiting the butterfly garden. It was such a delight, and I managed to capture some great shots of the flowers, a few dragonflies, and the turtles hanging out in the man-made pond.
I spent about two hours exploring, but by noon, the Florida sun was definitely starting to heat things up. If you plan on visiting, I highly recommend bringing along some bug spray. It’s a beautiful spot that is well worth the trip!
By the time I headed back to the car, the Florida heat had arrived. Even so, Moccasin Lake had already given me everything I had hoped for-quiet trails, beautiful wildlife, and a morning that reminded me why i keep coming back to places like this. I’ll definitely be back.
